Italy Travel Guide

Italy Destination Guides

Italy’s Most Popular Areas

See below for up-to-date travel guides and vacation ideas for destinations in Italy; including where to stay, the best time to visit, things to do and more.

  • Emilia Romagna: Emilia Romagna is located in the north of Italy and is a rich historical and cultural site. With an 11th century university in Bologna, and other medieval villages including Bobbio, Castell’Arquato, Brisighella, Dozza, San Leo, Fontanellato, and Gualtieri, this region is a must-visit for history buffs. The region is also famous for its cuisine. In Bologna, you will find the best tomato and meat sauces, with Parma offering exquisite ham and parmigiano cheese, and the world’s finest balsamic vinegar found in Modena.
  • Rome: Rome is everyoneโ€™s dream vacation in Italy. Visiting the Colosseum and the Pantheon will take you back in time and allow you to revel in the past by admiring the incredible architectural sites built centuries ago. Vatican City, Trevi Fountain, the Roman Forum must also be given their due time. For those looking to enjoy nature, the Villa Borghese Gallery and Gardens, the Palatine Hills, and the Centro Storico & the Spanish Steps offer a healthy dose of history mixed with greenery.
  • Italy’s Lake Region: The five major lakes in the Italian Lake District include Maggiore, Lugano, Como, Iseo and Garda, moving from west to east. Lake Como is a popular destination for many reasons. The beauty of the lake is unparalleled, with its green blue clear water that will leave you stunned. The palazzi and gardens in Lake Maggiore, the vineyards, lemon trees, and olive groves that Lake Garda is surrounded by are gorgeous attractions that should not be missed either.
  • Venice: Built on over 118 islands, the canals are what Venice is most famous for, and you can appreciate riding in open boats. The gorgeous bridges, gondola rides, expert glassmaking, carnival celebrations, and labyrinthian alleys and paths will make your trip to Venice a unique experience that no other city in the world can offer.
  • Sicily: The island of Sicily is famous for its well-preserved ruins of Greek temples in the Valley of the Temples, the Palermo Opera House, and Baroque churches in Noto and Modica. Sicily will engulf you in culture and history and will leave you in awe of the architectural wonders that the island has to offer. A mix of history and nature is also present in Sicily in the form of Mount Etna, which is one of Europeโ€™s highest active volcanoes.
  • Amalfi Coast: The Amalfi Coast awards similar views to the Lake Region, with pastel-coloured fishing villages, sheer cliffs, and a rugged shoreline with scenic beaches. Enjoy the handmade ceramics and the limoncello sourced from the lemon orchards in Amalfi, while also indulging in some more history and architecture by visiting the 13th century Amalfi Cathedral, and the San Gennaro Church.
  • The Dolomites: The Dolomite Alps are famous for skiing, hiking, mountain climbing, cycling, paragliding and hanggliding. If youโ€™re a fan of hiking, make sure to visit the circuit loop of Tre Cime di Lavaredo, renowned as an icon of the Dolomites. It has been hailed as the best hiking trail in the region, mainly because it is not a very difficult trail to hike.

Italy Travel FAQ

When is the best time to visit Italy?

May, June, September, and October are the most popular months for visiting Italy, but this also means that it is very crowded and expensive during this time. If you don’t mind colder weather and you’re not looking to swim, winter is also a beautiful time to visit.

What is the weather like in Italy?

Summer temperatures can reach high 90s F and can be too hot unless you are near a body of water, but the Northern lake region tends to be cooler compared to the South of Italy.
ย
January and February are the coldest months, and the mountainous regions in the north may be unbearable for those not ready for multiple layers and thermals. The Southern coastal regions have mild winters, and some nice beaches to enjoy the winter sun on.
